Incorporating exercise into my busy life
I would workout… if I only belonged to a club…, if I had more time…, if I knew what exercises to do…, if I wasn’t always so tired…, if my family would do it too…, if it just didn’t suck to have to work hard…
Who out there reading this has said something like this or thought this way? Raise your hand. It’s o.k., people will think your stretching. Well I have said them myself, and I am sure you have too at some point or at least something like them. I workout and do events quite often, but I also am a realist. I have job (yes a real job, not just blogging about my new found fitness), a awesome wife, and two kids, a house with a lawn that needs mowing, among other things that take time. I for one know just how hard it can be to eat right, and get in those workouts. Lets see if I can help overcome some of the above opportunities.
If I only belonged to a club…
- Who the heck needs a frickin’ health club? Unless they offer some specialty service, I don’t know why they exist. It drive me nuts to see all these 24/7 clubs popping up in every stupid strip mall all across America. Outside, in your living room, where ever, these are the greatest health clubs, oh and they’re FREE! Running, Jumping, climbing, crawling… It’s all there and it’s easy to do by yourself if you try it. Look at the phases above, all can be done with no or very little equipment. I belong to the MBG gym in Madison, because they offer one of the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs in the area. But I also love to go outside and run to the park to get my workout done.
If I had more time…
- I remember thinking about getting into some fitness classes at a gym back in 2008 and wondering how people can find time for it. It takes an hour for the workout, plus about 30 minutes each way to drive there, and back? How do people with jobs, families, and other activities have 2+ hours to workout everyday? Well unlike talent, Money, or super genes in our blood we all have the same amount of time, and if I’m not mistaken the world turns at the same rate for everyone on the planet. All I can say is, I am glad I figured out how to start and stick with my 30 min. or less workouts.
- Keys to my success were good habits and flexibility. No, not the can I touch my ankle behind my head kind of flexible. But the I will workout when ever the chance is available and get it done kind of flexible. You can usually find an extra 30 minutes in the morning before the kids get up or the day gets too busy. For people who are at work, getting outside and doing some exercises rather than sitting at a buffet is a good idea. I always pack my workout clothes the night before in case I don’t remember or have time in the morning. Do this even if you don’t think you have time to get a workout in, it builds a good habit. Remember to be flexible and workout around family and job requirements. Even if your fit and healthy being broke or unemployed is no fun. Finding balance is critical and I am here to help you do just that. How about watching TV, computer games, and Facebook? You have time to do this stuff, why not do some exercise instead. Funny thing is we all make time for things that are IMPORTANT to us. Is your health important to you?
If I knew what exercises to do…
- Climbing, crawling, running, jumping, biking, grappling, it’s all here and how to do it correctly is on video. I love to mix up the week with resistance training and cardio. Some sports can be hard on the joints but that is what yoga is for and sometime a little vitamin I(buprofen) can help.
If I wasn’t always so tired…
- Why do you think your tired? Most people don’t realize that after a workout your body responds with endorphins that act like a drug. You actually get more energy from working out. Imagine being 20 lbs lighter how much easier the stairs would be. How much energy do you use lofting around those extra unwanted pounds? Workout, get rest, feel great.
If my family would do it too…
- Well here’s an idea! Get your family involved. I don’t mind pushing my kids in the jogger down to the park, it’s a win/win for everyone. Get the family to cheer you on at the next local 5K, it will build your confidence and be a great example to the kids to stay fit and healthy. I love to wrestle with my boys, and as they get bigger it’s getting harder to work them over. But at least I can keep up for now.
If it just didn’t suck to have to work hard…
- Who says you have to train to exhaustion every workout? Sure, you need to push yourself and doing challenging exercises, but once you feel the satisfaction of conquering that jungle gym, or steep sledding hill you will feel glad you worked so hard. Usually a good steady effort consistently is what counts the most. HIIT training isn’t for everyone, so a good labored-conversation pace is acceptable for longer periods of time (45+minutes) to get the same work done.
Making it fun is the most important thing to concentrate on. No matter if it’s an Ironman qualifier, or jog through the arboretum.

Comfort zone
How often do you get out of your comfort zone? Do you push yourself beyond your normal limits? These are questions only you have the answers too.
Pushing your fitness limits can be exhilarating, it can give you a new lease on life and help you live happier, and healthier. Here is a perfect example of reaching goals and getting out of your comfort zone. Trying something new can make you feel better than ever.
My uncle Jayme did his first running event. The Madison Mini Marathon & 5K. He did it with outstanding form and had a great time. His results for the 5k:
- Time: 25:25
- 57th over all out of 686 finishers
- 4th in his age bracket
Now that is an awesome race, and not to bad for being 225 lbs only a year or so ago. Not only has Jayme lost weight, but now he is fit and feeling great. Running never felt so good, so now he runs with his friends on the weekend.
Next year he and I agreed we will do the half marathon together. I look forward to this and many more events with my Get Fit Staying Fit peeps.
